Following the two previous shows which dealt with landscape from different points of view, this and the next focusses on serialised sculpture, which is one further focal point in our gallery programme. With David Neat & Astrid Bärndal we also continue with Side by Side where we present in succession 2 x 2 artists pairs who both happen to live and work in London and, who each have similar approaches to their work. While the epicenter of life of the previous pair Susan Collins & Tim Head had always been in London, the English man and the born Swede lived a long time in Hamburg/Germany. David Neat will still be known to many collectors in Hamburg and elsewhere for his work in progress series Faim de Siècle – Hunger of the century, in which he gives his hommage to some of the most renowned artists of the 20thcentury in the form of an unedible confectionery, when he will be presenting his new body of work after 8 years at Osterwalders Art Office. David Neat & Astrid Bärndal share an affinity with organic form; celebrating the variety, intricacy and beauty of nature while both adapting its forms to their own personal languages. Both consider craftsmanship as vital to their work; technical processes of making will often generate or contribute directly to content. David Neat utilises for Lifebranches the language of plants to convey the life-experiences of selected people, and Birdsongs seeks to simply convey the language of birds in delicate sculptural form.	Astrid Bärndal digitally creates hybrid organic forms using photography as a basis, which are then given their own three-dimensional existence through a variety of sculptural processes; a reflection both of natural evolution and genetic manipulation Both artists view the technical side of making…the creative manipulation of materials…as a natural evolutionary process, paralleling the way nature constantly creates new and adaptive ‘life signs’. David Neat (born 1956 St. Albans, England) studied Art History and Theatre Science at Glasgow University; Junior Honeyman Price; Theatre-Design Riverside Studios, London; Arts Council Stipendium for Theatre Design; Stage and costume designer at the Royal National Theatre, the Young Vic; 1989 Stage design at Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg. 1992 - 2000 visual artist in Hamburg. Teaching since his return to London beside the production of his own sculptures at several instituitions „Model-Making-Techniques“ such as Wimbledon College of Art, Central Saint Martins, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Rose Bruford College and V&A, as well as his own summer courses for professional designers. Astrid Bärndal (born 1963 Stockholm, Sweden) studied textile design at the Akademie der bildenden Künste, Stuttgart an, Industrial design & Visual Art at the Hochschule für bildende Künste (HfbK) in Hamburg. From 1991 visual artist in Stockholm and Hamburg. Participated with her objects and installations in many national and international solo and group shows & has won many prices such as 1997 Grand Prix International Triennal Talinn, Estonia; 2000 Kleine Form Ganz Gross, Kulturstiftung Stormarn. Lives since 2008 as a visual artist, photographer and webdesigner in London, England.
