1916 the story of the photographers family Klar was born. Three generations of one family working in the same profession. Willi Klar is developing from a professional footballer to a versatile photographer, who together with Paul Wolf rises in becoming the pioneers of industrial photography. Remaining in his fathers footsteps is the son Dieter Klar in the field of press and advertising photography becoming friendly with telvision, while the grandchild Reto Klar finally succeeds in the same métier, but with the visual imagery of a different generation.

This exhibition lives from contrasts, contradictions and confrontations as well as provocation also expressing the collaboration with Osterwalders Art Office. Graphic interaction, typography and layout are defined in this project.

Willi Klar, born on 9. Juli 1907, father of Dieter Klar and Grandfather of Reto Klar. Photographer of theater, portrait, fashion and advertising. He photographed the post-war period, the destroyed Frankfurt am Main and, he documented from 1959 till 1972 the reconstruction of the German large scale industry (Wirtschaftswunder). He participated in more than 100 industry books. He was a theatre photographer in the „Main” metropolis Frankfurt. Celebreties in the post-war period were guests at the family house of the Klars „I have photographed everything” Willi Klar sums it up: Sport, fashion, industry, advertising, theatre, celebrity, actors. National and international exhibitions, books and a huge picture archive are proof of the originality and the creativity of a chronicler of our times. Willi Klar died on 11. April 1994.

Dieter Klar, born on 9. September 1937 in Frankfurt am Main. Industry-, advertising- and fashion photographer, photojournalist, producer, director, book author to name but a few. National and international exhibitions, including the permanent show „Klar-Sichten” in the Haus der Geschichte, Berlin. Founding member and president of the association Kulturforum am Hafen e.V., Buxtehude. Co-founder and producer of the International Musik Festival (IMF) Buxtehude & Altes Land in lower Saxony nearby Hamburg.

Reto Klar was born on 24.March 1967 in Buxtehude. With his first camera, a small Nikon, he had begun with his hobby that was to become his profession. To follow later was a panorama camera and a Camera Obscura. He used to love to work with old Polaroid 665-films. He completed his traineeship at Deutsche Presse Agentur (dpa) under his fathers auspices, who worked there for many years. His Grandfather showed him the secrets of film development and enlargement. 1990 he received an offer from „Welt am Sonntag” newspaper. With images of his Hamburg series he published his first book „Hamburger Augenblicke” (1991). Several further book projects were to follow. The last one called „Unvisible: about life on the streets - homeless people in portrait” (2014). Reto was photo journalist for several magazines and newspapers. Since 2014 he is head of photography forthe daily newspaper Berliner Morgenpost (Funke Mediengruppe) focussing on interviews with politicians and actors as well as artist portraits. Reto Klar lives with his family in Berlin.
