Hans-Ulrich Osterwalder

"A different point of view" - or - at the beginning there was the image?

Opening Friday 12. November from 7 p.m. running until 11. Dezember
The exhibition will be reopened from January 5th until February 5th.

To coincide with the Deichtorhallen exhibition in Hamburg "die Kunst des Spiegel" - front cover illustrations of five decades - Angelika Osterwalder presents in her space works of her partner Hans Ulrich Osterwalder. The illustrator, graphic designer, and recently also autor of childrens books, is in this Spiegel front cover exhibition (the weekly German magazin Der Spiegel) with his until now worldwide most widely distributed illustration presented. A splendid occasion to bring together a larger selection of his equally long ongoing production in a solo show. As far as possible in the original version as well as presentations of several magazins, newspapers, posters, books and publications of works made for his clients .

This exhibition is also addressing the question if there was at the beginning the word or the image? And the difference between commercial and fine art today. An issue that has intrigued the illustrator, art collector and curator for many years. It is accompanied by a film in which Hans Ulrich Osterwalder presents 100 images with emphasis on scientific illustration

Hans-Ulrich Osterwalder studied in Zurich at the Schule für Gestaltung in the best of Bauhaus tradition with Johannes Itten among others; and he served his apprentice ship to become a commercial artist with Walter Herdeg (the first publisher of Graphis & Graphis Annual) and Werner Zryd. He then worked in advertising in Switzerland, Italy and Germany doing all that what you would call graphic design today. As an illustrator he is autodidact. But as far back as in the studio of Antonio Boggeri in Milan, he made his first advertising series with illustrations and in 1965 his first book of illustrations of an anthologie of the "Blues" by Joachim Ernst Berendt. In the Paris publishing house Archimède/L'ècole des Loisirs is first childrensbook titled les os de mon squelette - dealing with a fracture and the 208 bones - had been published mid 2004.

Since 1966 he is freelance as partner for illustration, graphic design & composing. Analog and since the rervolution of the computer digital and three dimensional as well as animated. In close cooperation since 2001 with his assistant Peter Schrader. Many works have been realised in cooperation with colleagues and scientists for the many clients from A - Z like Archimède, BASF, Bayer, Bild der Wissenschaft, Cosmopolitan, Brigitte (Lexikon für die Frau), Deutscher Sparkassen Verlag, Deutsche Telekom, DVA, Esso, Grünenthal (Takeda) HGF (Forschungsthemen, Insel & Suhrkamp Verlag, Manager- Magazin, Nivea, Novartis, Optikerverband, Psychologie Heute, Schering Forschungsmagazin, Spektrum der Wissenschaft, Spiegel, Stern, Twen, Zeit-Magazin.
1987 the renowned graphic designer Bruno Monguzzi engaged him as guest lecturer to the Scuola Superiore per arte applicata (CSIA) in Lugano for which he is just preparing his next workshop.

"My picture language has become the image of my reality. My style, if at all, develops from conformity within the contents of the assignement. Knowledge should become even more knowledgeable"... H. U. Osterwalder

Hans Ulrich Osterwalder lives and works with his second wife Angelika Osterwalder in Hamburg and supports her in her work as a curator and gallerist of international contemporary art.
