The source of his work are amateur photographs by anonymus photographers, which he is not using as hidden models, but addressing it directly. The photo albums of his parents are also a source for his work.

While many works in the show have the photo as its prime source to give the impulse for the paintings and drawings, often imitating the character of old photographs, the other works are mostly found objects and, at the same time they are the canvas for photographic imagess. They amalgamete with painted space, or correspond with reduced drawings. Thus the found objects such as metal plate, wood panels, old files as well as paper and karton are becoming the canvas for Paulus work. They are mostly monochrome with sometimes frayed edges and blind spots.

With his body of work Paulus evokes memories, childhood memories, mind fragments. The past lingers like a veil over these pictures. Some immages appear to be slowly disintegrating before the spectator, others seem to emerge stronger from the background, like photos that are still lying in the developer slowly gaining contour.

In the gallery there are several publications by Martin Paulus available. Beside his newest book Silber am Himmel we have copies of The Albums (2005) or Indian Leporello in stock.

...In Martin Paulus pictures the formally photographic existence, its photographic past, is not revealed. It appears to have overcome and detached itself, gone different ways... It seems that the documental material of the photographs have passed through the painter and, filtered by his subjectivity, no trace of the photographic source remains. What has happened in front of a lens years and decades ago good matured and gone for ever Martin Paulus has extended into our immediate presence... Hans Lechleitner

Martin Paulus (born in 1961) has studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. He was the official German artist for the Olympic Games in 1992 in Barcelona. He received the graduation stipendium of the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich and he has participated nationally and internationally in many solo and group shows. This is his fourth solo show in Hamburg. He lives and works in the south of Germany and will be present at the opening.

german version

Susan Collins
Shez Dawood (shez360)
Lela Erlenwein
Christiane Gerlach
Heino Goeb
Vanessa Grannum
Kevin Francis Gray
Richard Hartwell
Tim Head
Bertolt Hering
Eva Klatten
David Neat - Pralinenobjekte
Nemo G.
